Biography
Jay Baldwin ("JB") occasionally worked under, for, and with Buckminster Fuller for 33 years. Since 1958, he has practiced and taught ecological design at Farallons Institute, Rocky Mountain Institute, Integrated Living Systems Lab, New Alchemy Institute on Cape Cod (where his lightweight, solar-heated Pillowdome prototype raised bananas in February, 100 percent solar) and ten U.S. colleges and universities. One of his students, Charles Hall, invented the waterbed.
He's been Technology, Nomadics and Tools editor (and occasionally the editor) of Whole Earth Review (formerly CoEvolution Quarterly) and Whole Earth Catalogs since 1968, and authored BuckyWorks -- Buckminster Fuller's Ideas for Today.

For ten years, he was a Land Steward for the five-square-mile Pepperwood preserve owned by the California Academy of Sciences. JB also co-founded what became California's largest whitewater river guide service.
In 1992, JB directed the dismantling of Bucky Fuller's Wichita Dymaxion House for the Henry Ford/Greenfield Village museum in Dearborn, Michigan, where it is currently on display.
Presently, JB is teaching industrial design at California College of the Arts in San Francisco, perfecting his radical patented Quick-up camper (an agile, stable RV that gets double the gas mileage of conventional designs) and writing a book on managing the darker side of technology.

Question: Remembering Bucky's Spirit to achieve prismatic thinking patterns
Hi Jay, ready for some random synergy? I have a small but fun request. You knew Bucky for 33 years, can you please answer this question not only from you and your experience, but also access your memories of Bucky. What would he have said? I've often had dreams of having conversations with Buckminster Fuller. I guess this is not the norm of requests, but it is a sincere one. A little odd, but it might be fun for you to remember Bucky deeply again, feel his energy, feel his wisdom in you and in your everyday life to answer a question based in randomness. Anyway, my question relates to an idea that I've had for years that is strangely similar to how Bucky interpreted what he saw and described as Spaceship Earth. We are all one mind on this little rock we call Earth.
Jay, you are an inventor. You thought up and created the Quickup Camper so you will understand this question. It deals with invention of synaptic patterns and causing innovation in the human brain. When Buckminster Fuller conceived the geodesic dome, he dreamed that it would house humanity. Domes are frameworks of self-bracing triangles, and the geodesic dome is the strongest and most economical structure ever designed. No other form of enclosure covers so much area without internal supports. The larger it is, the stronger it becomes. Is this also true about our mentality. Once cooperative and inventive synergy develops in the brain and connects to other self-bracing human beings, the stronger our brain gets. Individually and collectively. It is a physical muscle, after all.
Bucky challenges the brain. "To make the world work for 100% of humanity in the shortest possible time through spontaneous cooperation without ecological offense or the disadvantage of anyone." He states that "The human brain apprehends and stores each sense reported bit of information regarding each special case experience. Only special case experiences are recallable from the memory bank."

He is talking about growing the brain and where in the brain the new information is stored. Now my question is this: Utilizing the philosophy of Spaceship Earth and Synergetics, I would like to build a formula to help the human brain realize some of these larger concepts that is so imperative to know in our time. I would like to help the human mind realize that we are all one. Jay, it's like I have this unquenchable humanistic obligation to help the human brain wake up. I have raw passion and I'm the most determined person you'll likely meet. I would like to incorporate the wisdom of many people including Bucky and you into starting a global conversation (because speaking creates reality) about what growing our brain might look like. What would spontaneous cooperation look like in the world of invention? Are open sourcing principals, Synergetics, and the Degrees of Separation applicable here? If we are to take the lead where Bucky left off, we get to adapt our mind to the reality of multidimensional relationships between all the pieces of the problem.

Certain people have received grants from BFI to study and question how Bucky relates to nanotechnology, biotechnology and computer information systems. I would like to talk to you about inspiring a grant to question into the world how Bucky's ideas relates to a mind shift in a currently flawed system that invents our world. I want to inspire paradigm shift in invention. Letting people know that Prismatic Thought is not only possible... it is probable. Can you please advise?

Woo, Martin, you're a hungry soul, aintcha. I have long thought that humans have always had the pretty much the same basic problems that need solving today. Essentially, almost all of the problems center around making all humans a success on Earth. Of course, it would be nice if everyone able get together and went to work on the important stuff, but this has proven very hard to accomplish. I decided to deal with what I found on my plate: improving the efficiency of energy-using hardware and working on becoming an attractor for knowledge. I put a lot of time into editing that collected know-how in a way that encouraged and revealed synergy. That is pretty much what we were trying to do with the several Whole Earth Catalogs and their siblings starting in 1968. We made what amounted to a paper Google. Though the current Google know-how collection is not very well focused (focus is what editors do for a living), it certainly could be. The way Google presents information needs work, too; popularity rather than truth determines order and attention. Unlike Whole Earth, no effort is made to ensure veracity, or which is the best of the breed. Whole Earth offerings were carefully chosen by skilled people who understood the subjects. Our choices and opinions were verified by reader feedback. We also did not present negative opinion, politics and snarky stuff. Founder, Stewart Brand wrote our motto, "All we owe our readers is good infomation." We especially did not deal in beliefs. Sespite flaws, Google offers the framwork, and the software, and it is getting more flexible and easier to work with. If Google or something like it can hold off the censors, it has the potential of becoming just what you call for.
I have seen claims that it takes about 2 million people all wanting the same thing to make something important happen. It has to do with the "degrees of separation" effect and the means of communication that are available to everyone. Also, I think that, though Bucky said "you can make money or you can make sense," people need money to live decently, and any Big Changes sought will have to be profitable or, right or wrong, people will not go for it. Since a lot of what should be done to make humans a success on Earth has to do with efficienct use of materials and energy, it should be possible to make some money while we are at it. This leads me to the growing interest in re-forming corporations. They have the finances, organization and know-how to make the needed changes. Amory Lovins has been hammering on this theme for many years, despite sneers from purists that he is a sell-out. (The same sneerers also sneered at Bucky). I don't see any hope that politics will work, because politics is essentially non-comprehensive, putting party needs ahead of the needs of the people. I don't see a good answer coming from religion; nearly all assume that this world (including us) is flawed beyond help, and that things will be better in the afterlife. But, Heaven, Nirvana, or whatever—none of the predictions of an afterlife are provable.
I agree with Bucky that, except for a few subversive seniors, it is the young people that must make the big changes happen. They need proof that their hard work will pay off. They need demonstrations of successful moves. That's what I and many others have been working at for 50 years or so. I don't know much about the geometry of thinking, but I do know how much can be done by a bunch of dedicated people who want to move forward. My models and inspiration include Bucky, Lockheed's "Skunk Works" (a red-tape-eliminating scheme), the late New Alchemy Institute, and the 66,000 person team that put a man on the moon.
That last example was made possible by a large segment of the public excited by the challenge and their fear of Russian technology. Think what could have been accomplished if that team had been made up of both US and Russian engineers! Think of what could have been accomplished if the 66,000 person team had been assigned a new global task rather than being dissolved.
Bucky was trying to form a team (essential if you are going to be comprehensive). He was a team of one, seeking to add members by capturing the imagination of students of all ages. That's us and our students. Evolution makes many starts. Not all make it, but the successful tries are what will determine the future. Bucky said that we could make it as a species, but as he got older, he grew less hopeful that we would. Bucky offered no formula for success, but he insisted there was one critical ingredient: "In the end, only integrity is going to count." That's up to us. JB

Let's talk about invention...
Hello humans! Let's discuss invention. What's wrong, what's right, and how it's changing.
I grew up in a home full of love, music, and revolutionary thought. It was just normal to think this way. It was fun; we were experiencing life, together. We questioned our world, by realizing that everything changes. Nothing is a “Truth” in life except birth and death, the rest are individual transient truths. I’ve always been fascinated with gadgets, inventions, and the wonder of creating growth, positive change, and love from a thought, a theory, or an idea. I started creating ideas that are beneficial from the love, respect, and enlightenment point of view for humans. I looked at multi-dimensional relationships between things. In all situations I try to explore all possibilities and feel the importance of thinking deeper and questioning. I’ve realized how powerful the brain is in creating ideas and how powerful the human interaction is to make those ideas real. There are certain ideas and feelings that exist that are able to transcend language, geography, prejudice, and ego in humans. I am gathering these types of ideas. We need your help. We are starting a company called Paradigm Holdings. We are focusing and gathering the scientific proof of mental growth and dimensional brain expansion. This blog will be a catalyst for the revolution; one of millions, contributed by myself and others. I am just like you, you are just like me. Thank you for reading my thoughts. Enjoy and explore.

The human mind is a very powerful muscle. It is the most powerful muscle in the human body yet it is the most underutilized. This previous fact is at the root of most of the human suffering on Planet Earth. If we did think at a high capacity, if we did think dimensionally instead of linearly, we could talk through our disagreements with each other and other cultures instead of dropping bombs. We would realize a way to have universal healthcare for 6.9 billion people. We would erase global hunger.

1) What is your idea or concept?
This is a breakthrough idea because of the unique solution to a significant problem faced by inventors worldwide. There currently exists a lack of trust between individual inventors. Wide scale fraud is common, and accepted as “the rules of the game” within the industry. Sometimes people suppress their ideas because of lack of trust and blatantly unethical business practices that are accepted as "the norm." Innovation is truly squelched. Additionally, the amount of information that’s available about invention is sometimes overwhelming. Some inventors lose direction and don’t know where to go next, or even where to begin. This concept will go a long way toward solving this problem.
Open Source Inventing will offer inventors a system to help sift through the information and mis-information surrounding the invention-to-market process, so that they can move forward more confidently. As more and more people rate their real-life experiences, inventors will gain wisdom while holding invention companies accountable for their business practices. The website will enhance the creation and development of ideas through newly opened communication lines between the inventors and the companies that can help them. As we build a network of inventors and affiliates we have the opportunity to become an authority in helping people bring their ideas to fruition.
There are many resources out there for inventors. Why would they trust this new source of information? We’ll gain trust by creating an inventors’ forum, to provide them with a worldwide platform for expressing their opinions. (watch for www.OpinionParking.com) Open Source will be affiliated with various companies that have a proven track record of dealing fairly with inventors; in this way we will be able to refer our inventors to companies that will help them, and not take advantage of them. We will align ourselves with affiliates that have positive customer feedback because their vision and mission are the same as ours; creating, building, and maintaining trust and integrity in the invention industry.
We will not be an invention submission website, rather a site that creates a new medium and depth of communication.
Open Source Inventing will cultivate openness and communication while giving inventors the inside information on the industry. The majority of people don’t explore their ideas because of one of two reasons; a lack of trust or a lack of knowledge, or a combination of both. These inhibit the process of bringing an idea to fruition. OSI will unlock the potential to explore ideas and thoughts in a risk-free environment that doesn’t cost a thing. There’s nothing in the marketplace that lets novice inventors “kick the tires” of invention. OSI will give people a place to explore their ideas with no pressure to spend thousands of dollars to continue in the invention process. OSI will help people who might never have been inventors before this site was established. We will bring people from the fringe, which were never part of the market—into the market.
The users of this idea will be varied. First and foremost, inventors will use the site. Looking at the search results using the powerful search engine, people will research the individual companies that can help them bring their idea to market. Companies will also use this site to get a real-time view of how they are seen in the marketplace from the point of view of innovators of new ideas.

Another method for becoming a high growth business is creating and utilizing a network of inventors that are specialized in a specific area of invention. Arguably, all people are connected in some way. By the use of this network, we’re uniquely placed to introduce the inventor to a desired “expert” who is motivated to see his/her idea come to market.
In conclusion, this concept is a high growth business because of these key factors: we are tapping into a market that is growing exponentially, we have no direct competition, and we are providing a unique niche-related service that inventors need.
The following are specific examples of the strategy for executing and promoting OSI: website design and software development, targeted marketing in the nationwide invention network, creation of a database of the interested parties (permission marketing), and a frequently asked questions resource for people. The direct marketing aspect is critical to develop because this represents our target market of inventors. This will provide a network to promote OSI while strengthening the relationships amongst inventors.
Another strategy for executing this idea is to bring together members of the invention community to help to direct the development of the user interface and the start-up stage of this venture. OSI will involve seasoned inventors and also new inventors to gain the broadest feedback possible.
One of the most critical resources needed is capital, to get the website designed, programmed, and live. We’d also need to gather the resources for the informational portions of the site. These can be gathered in a variety of locations with no cost to OSI. The publications and articles that we feature on our site would be constantly updated and we will have guest invention writers from notable publications (eg. Entrepreneur Magazine, United Inventors Association). Partnerships with invention publications can also be included on the site for inventors to access.
Our development team can approach this business by focusing on our two main goals: to make information available to inventors, and to create mutual trust in the invention community. We will compile a large amount of information about the invention process and focus it into a smooth and precise user interface where people will easily find the references they are searching for. The trust aspect of the business growth refers to accountability and the rating systems. Ease of use is critical in the development of the site because it will allow casual users to easily explore their ideas and curiosity.
There will be two portions of the site, and they both are viable. One is the free utilities of the site—the rating system and the resources that we provide. This area of the site will increase traffic and awareness of the Open Source Invention business model. This aspect will also help to find multiple and ever growing revenue streams within a segment of the market that remains untapped. The second portion of the site will be accessible only to people who have decided to become members of OSI. Membership fees will be the main source of revenue for the site (until we invent other revenue streams within the first 18 months). The benefits (for both the inventor and OSI) of membership will increase exponentially with the added number of people in the network. As members, people will be able to request references to people and companies that can help their idea to market with velocity and determination. It gives them a possibility to strive for. It gives them a goal. It helps to confirm the power their ideas.
Open Source Invent.com is a very uniquely designed business model. OSI will have low overhead costs—the only costs associated with this concept are the hosting fees and the servers. We will not buy inventory or product; we will give away knowledge and sell a trusted meeting place for inventors. The assets that we own will outweigh the liabilities that we owe. Our assets will consist of the network of inventors and the ratings of the marketplace, our customer list, our intellectual property, and our proprietary software.
The success of this business model is something that can be easily achieved in 2-3 years. The financial projections are to reach profitability in one year. Through word of mouth the reputation of OSI will travel from invention circle to invention circle, eventually reaching other industries. This model of rating and cooperative communication will be emulated in other industries.

What is Paradigm Holdings, LLC?
The Mission and Vision of Paradigm Holdings, LLC is simply to cause enough new conversation in the world about mental evolution, ethical and connected invention, and human brain expansion that it actually occurs in multiple industries across the world. Think about that....what would that look like synaptically? I would like to inspire a joint medical and scientific study to report on what that global shift might look like in the neural net of the human mind.Our major goal is to give the individual person a global voice that other people listen to objectively and then act on. Through Paradigm Holdings, that lone voice can cut through the "normal BS" that is the world affairs. Think about this simple statement...speaking creates reality. The forefathers of the United States created our country out of a declaration of speaking that was directed at England. It created reality for England by letting them know that these people are going to start their own country. Now back in the present, if a lot of people speak together with one voice, it becomes something else entirely. It becomes a movement. We are causing a Mental rEvolution. The world listens to millions that speak as one. This is the premise driving Paradigm Holdings, LLC.
Collectively we human beings use only a small portion of our brain. In addition we still use it linearly and not dimensionally. It's like trying to surf the web with an old Commodore 64 computer. You just can't do it. What Paradigm Holdings will do for the world is help us all evolve...quickly.
Altruistic Ventures
This is the non-profit portion of Paradigm Holdings; we will be set up as a 501(c)3. This site will include my personal theories, mantras, rants, manifestos, ideas, etc. This site will be an information resource for people to go to so they can keep their mind wondering. It is important to be grounded in realty while still questioning the world.
I will include my personal journals, my digital recordings, my napkin scratch drawings, and have guest writers, philosophers, mediation specialists on the site.
Open Source Invent
This is the action of the Altruistic Ventures effect in the world. This will take some explaining for you to see the power of this idea fully, however maybe you'll get it right away, which would be cool. Everything in our physical world was invented at some point. The pencil, the computer that printed this document, your car, the smog that's choking us to death, sidewalks, the New York stock exchange, war, fire, religion, meditation, the wheel, math, talking, etc. In today's time, there are many inherent problems with "HOW" inventions come into the world. Have you ever had an idea and not known where to go with it? Worse yet, have you contracted with those invention submission companies and gotten ripped off?
The problem is that there is no ethical system that we created together that's built into capitalism that helps individual people invent their ideas into reality quickly like the big companies and the people with influence can do. There is no invention system that mentally and physically helps people accept the fact that inventing is easier, more effective, and more beneficial to all, if we ethically collaborate and shed our fear of it. Open Source Invent will help to solve this 'false' barrier by building a mutual collaboration system to invent while operating in a framework of the free and ethical exchange of ideas toward a greater than ourselves goal.
In the software world there is a process of program development called Open Source. It basically means cooperating and sharing the ownership and the burden of building and perfecting a program instead of fighting over ownership, money, and who built what. It means that a lot of people work on a program together, changing it, adapting it, having fun evolving it, to make it a better program. By combining Open Sourcing principals with the new process of connected and ethical invention, we will literally invent a new way to invent. Think about that. It would positively affect everything in our world because everything in our world was invented by us at some point…think about it…OUR ENTIRE CULTURE, EVERYTHING!
Within Open Source Invent, we will be adding experts in niche fields to help with the inventor, the invention, and innovation process itself. We will be connecting them and hosting talks with the idea holder, and then connecting all these people with the people who are inspired to fund the idea. Then all these people are introduced to a person from a manufacturer, then a marketing expert, etc. All these new contacts come from referrals within the group that you built. It creates a snowball effect in the inventive process. All of a sudden we have a wonderful conversation of discovery with different people bringing different things to the table. All ownership and profits are shared between these people because they are all connected somehow through the Degrees of Association.

In the current time, the Industrial Revolution is coming to an end because the manufacturing is being outsourced to offshore companies because we know (some consciously, some it's still just a feeling) that there is a mental shift that is about to happen in this country. Ideas are the fuel for this mental engine we call our brain. As a result of the collective realization, the mental revolution is going to occur. We, The People, need to see this and start talking about this because we all know its coming! Once we speak it, it becomes closer to reality. We are going to become the world’s idea factory.
THIS IS CRITICAL TO UNDERSTASND: if we do not build a new system to handle ideas ethically, positively, bringing people together, instead of pitting them against each other this new USA will be filled full of greed and corruption as is today’s United States. We have the opportunity in front of us to cause a paradigm shift in our country! We can recreate our world, and we can do it together!
